Tosa Inu characteristics

Morphologically classed as a Molosser, Tosa Inu dogs are large and powerful and of an imposing size, and combine dignity, strength, and elegance with a robust build. The head is very large, the hanging ears are triangular, the fur is short, and the muzzle is blunt and squared, with a lot of skin around the throat. Tosa Inu characteristics: The body is linear with a very long neck, the snout is pronounced, the nose is dark, the teeth are very strong, and the chest is pronounced. The eyes are small and very dark, and reveal the dog’s bold dignified nature. The front legs are straight, well proportioned with wide muscular thighs; the hind legs are slightly oblique, but much more developed than the front ones. The paws are flat and springy, the tail reaches the hock; when the dog is still the tail hangs down, but when the dog moves or is stimulated, it carries its tail in a straight line. The fur is resistant to low temperatures even though it is very short; it is red and sometimes has red markings on a white base or the other way round. The testicles must be positioned along the scrotum and clearly visible.

The chest: wide and high, with moderately defined ribs. The lumbar region is wide and muscular. The back is slightly curved at its peak. The head and muzzle: the upper part of the cranium is wide; the front nasal cavities meet the straight snout at an obtuse angle. The muzzle: is of medium length. The jaws: are strong. The head: is large with a wide cranium, the stop is abrupt and noticeable and the muzzle is moderately long and squared. The snout: is straight. The nose: is large and must always be black. The teeth: must be a complete set, strong, with a scissor bite. The teeth are large and resistant, especially the canines. The lips: the jaws are very strong and powerful. The neck: is thick, muscular, and wide with a dewlap. The ears: are relatively small, rather slender, and the lower portion reaches the cheeks, they are pointed, they sit high on the sides of the head, and hang down onto the cheeks. The eyes: are quite small and of a reddish brown, normally they are almond-shaped. The expression: is dignified, austere, and self-aware. The legs: straight front legs that are not very long, but strong. The metacarpus: slightly inclined, yet solid and robust. The feet: are closed and strong with large elastic pads, the nails are hard and strong. The forearms: are straight, moderately wide and strong. The hind legs: have well developed muscles. The articulations: the stifle joints and the hocks form a moderate angle and are solid. Lumbar region: wide and muscular, the back is slightly curved at the apex.

The hind feet: are quite similar to the front feet; the pads are tightly closed, thick and elastic; the nails are hard and preferably of a dark colour. The shoulders: oblique and moderately inclined. The gait: an energetic pace, that is wide and powerful, it expresses temperament and strength. Tosa Inu characteristics. The muscles: are well defined, especially the back ones. The bone structure: robust and vigorous. The tail: very strong at the root, it becomes thinner towards the tip; it hangs down and must reach the hocks. The skin: is elastic and quite detached from the body. The coat: is short, hard, thick, and strong, and covers the body thickly. Sexual characteristics: males must have testicles of a normal appearance that are completely descended into the scrotum, healthy and visible. Accepted colours: the favoured colour is a rich warm red; white markings on a red background are acceptable or red markings on a white background, or on a shade of red. Other colours: red, tawny, apricot, black, and red with dark stripes. Small markings: white ones on the chest and on the feet are acceptable. Most common flaws: protruding underbite, protruding upper jaw, cryptorchidism, monorchidism, an incorrect set of teeth, more than one tooth missing, a weak muzzle, a weak bone structure, a slightly wrong disposition of the teeth, colours that are not accepted by the standard, sizes that are not accepted by the standard, an incorrect gait, defective hindquarters, short forearms, a shy temperament, an aggressive attitude, a long muzzle, ears that are not carried well, a crooked tail, a short tail, a light coloured nose, light coloured eyes. Disqualifying flaws: 1) Fearful individuals 2) extremely protruding lower or upper jaws. Health: There are no health issues since Tosa Inus are very resistant dogs. The breed tends to put on weight easily: find out whether the lineage your Tosa descends from had some members that tended to put on weight as this problem should not be underestimated for such a powerful and large dog. The dog must be groomed every week to keep the coat shiny. Life expectancy: 10 -12 years.
